Position Purpose
This position will be a senior leader on the legal team that manages the legal teams responsible for supporting the work required after an application is submitted to USCIS. This includes teams responsible for: handling responses to Requests for Evidence or Notices of Intent to Deny; handling appeals; and helping clients adjust status (including representing clients at USCIS interviews) or go through consular processing after an initial application is approved.
This leader must be comfortable working with non-lawyers and operational teams to establish processes to achieve goals in a high volume work environment. This position will support a team of lawyers as they work with our operations teams to build processes and teams to support our attorneys and meet our client’s legal needs. This position will also support the attorney teams in training teams and auditing work product and maintaining ethical standards.
This leader should also have a strong knowledge of immigration law – including humanitarian applications – and approach problems with an advocate’s mindset. This position will handle legal escalations from their teams, identify future issues that needs resolved, and help develop legal strategy to resolve identified issues to help continue fighting for our clients.
This leader should also be comfortable identifying and developing leaders for the teams they are responsible for managing. As these teams continue to grow, it will be important that this position ensures we have the appropriate attorney support and staffing in place.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
- Help lead the attorney teams supporting the build out of the process for responding to RFEs/NOIDs, appealing denials, and guiding clients through AOS and consular processing
- Work closely with operational leaders to ensure processes and teams have sufficient and accurate legal guidance to meet client needs
- Work closely with other leaders to ensure that Phase II efforts are consistent with and integrated with work performed by other teams and phases
- Ensure that attorneys are properly training teams, auditing work product, and providing regular feedback to ensure quality of work.
- Perform legal and factual research
Essential Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Significant experience (5+ years or more) and immigration knowledge including experience with humanitarian cases such as VAWA, T-Visa, U-Visa, and Medical DA applications.
- Experience with some combination of the following tasks: helping clients through adjustment and consular processing; responding to RFEs and NOIDs; handling USCIS appeals
- Legal team management experience
- Strong legal research and drafting skills
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of ABA accredited law school
- Barred to practice law in a state or territory of the United States
- Over five years of experience as an attorney
- Significant experience (5+ years or more) and immigration knowledge including experience with humanitarian cases such as VAWA, T-Visa, U-Visa, and Medical DA applications, and substantive experience researching and drafting responses to RFEs or NOIDs
